Katha CHOPAIS

This section gives the main Katha Chopai (verse from the Tulsidas Ramayana) for many of the Ram Kathas. We will be adding more to this section.

Bal Kand – Shloka
varnanamarthasanghanam rasanam chhandsamapi | mangalanam cha karttarau vande vanivinayakau ||
वर्णानामर्थसंघानां रसानां छन्दसामपि । मड़्लानां च कर्त्तारौ वन्दे वाणीविनायकौ ॥
I reverence Vani ( the goddess of speech) and Vinayaka (Lord Ganesha), the originators of sounds represented by the alphabet, of the multitudes of objects denoted by those sounds, of poetic sentiments as well as of metres, and the begetters of all auspiciainess.

bhavanishankarau vande shradhdhavishvasarupinau | yabhyam vina na pashyanti sidhdha svantahasthamishvaram ||
भवानीशड़्करौ वन्दे श्रध्दाविश्वासरुपिणौ । याभ्यां विना न पश्यन्ति सिध्दाः स्वान्तःस्थमीश्वरम् ॥
I greet Goddess Parvati and Her consort, Bhagavan Shankara, embodiments of reverence and faith respectively, without which even the adept cannot perceive God enshrined in their very heart.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 325
Param punit bharat ācharanu | madhura manju muda mangal karanu ||
परम पुनीत भरत आचरनू । मधुर मंजु मुद मंगल करनू ॥
The most sanctifying story of Bharata’s doing is delightful and charming and a fountain of joy and blessings.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 218
Rām sadā sevak ruchi rākhi | beda purān sādhu sura sākhi ||
राम सदा सेवक रुचि राखी । बेद पुरान साधु सुर साखी ॥
Sri Rama has ever respected the wishes of His devotees: the Vedas and Puranas as well as saints and gods can bear testimony to this.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 325
Suni brat nema sādhu sakuchāhi | dekhi dasā munirāj lajāhi ||
सुनि ब्रत नेम साधु सकुचाहीं । देखि दसा मुनिराज लजाहीं ॥
Holy men felt abashed to hear of his religious vows and observances and the sight of his condition put the greatest of sages to shame.

Bal Kand – Doha 74
Umā charita sundar mai gāvā | sunahu sambhu kara charit suhāvā ||
उमा चरित सुंदर मैं गावा । सुनहु संभु कर चरित सुहावा ॥[Yajyavalkya says to Bharadvaja] I have thus sung the beautiful story of Uma; now hear the charming account of Sambhu.

Bal Kand – Doha 49
Sankaru jagatbandhya jagadisā | sura nara muni saba nāvat sisā ||
संकरु जगतबंद्य जगदीसा । सुर नर मुनि सब नावत सीसा ॥
Sankara is a Lord of the universe Himself, and deserves universal adoration; gods, men and sages all bow their head to Him.

Kiskindha Kand – Doha 29
Pavana tanaya bala pavana samānā | budhi bibeka bigyān nidhānā ||
पवन तनय बल पवन समाना । बुधि बिबेक बिग्यान निधाना ॥
A son of the wind-god, you are as strong as your father and are a storehouse of intelligence, discretion and spiritual wisdom.

Sundar Kand – Doha 29
Pavana tanaya ke charita suhāe | jāmvant raghupatihi sunāe ||
पवनतनय के चरित सुहाए । जामवंत रघुपतिहि सुनाए ॥
Jambavan then related to the Lord of the Raghus the charming exploits of Hanuman (the son of the wind-god).

Bal Kand – Doha 222
Parasi jāsu pada pankaj dhuri | tari ahalyā kruta agha bhuri ||
परसी जासु पद पंकज धुरी । तरी अहल्या कॄत अघ भूरी ।
Touched by the dust of His lotus-feet Ahalyå, who had perpetrated a great sin, attained salvation.

Sundar Kand – Doha 41
Je pada parasi tari rishināri | dandaka kānan pāvankāri ||
जे पद परसि तरी रिषिनारी । दंडक कानन पावनकारी ॥
I will behold those feet whose very touch redeemed the Rishi’s wife (Ahalyå), that hallowed the Dandaka forest.

Uttar Kand – Doha 61
uttara disi sundara giri nilā | taha raha kākabhusundi susilā ||
उत्तर दिसि सुंदर गिरि नीला । तहँ रह काकभुसुंडि सुसीला ॥
In the north there is a beautiful blue mountain called Nilagiri, where lives the amiable Kakabhusundi, highly conversant with the path of Devotion to Sri Rama, enlightened, full of all good qualities and ages old.

Bal Kand – Doha 5
kāsi maga surasari kramanāsā | maru mārava mahideva gavāsā ||
कासी मग सुरसरि क्रमनासा । मरु मारव महिदेव गवासा ॥
the sacred Kå‹∂ or Våråƒas∂ and
Magadha or North Bihar (the accursed land), the holy Ganga the river of the celestials and the unholy Karmanasa* (in Bihar), the desert land of Maravara (Western Rajaputana and Sindha) and the rich soil of Malava, the Brahma-who is a veritable god on earth – and the barbarian who feeds on the cow, heaven and hell, attachment and dispassion.

Bal Kand – Doha 89
Hamare jān sadā siva jogi | aja anvadhya akām abhogi ||
हमरें जान सदा सिव जोगी । अज अनवद्य अकाम अभोगी ॥
To my mind, however, Siva is eternally in rapport with the Infinite, unbegotten, irreproachable, passionless and given to sensual in.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 92
ehin jaga jāmini jāgahin jogi | paramārthi prapanch biyogi ||
एहिं जग जामिनि जागहिं जोगी । परमारथी प्रपंच बियोगी ॥
In this night of mundane existence it is Yogis (mystics) alone who keep awake, Yogis who are in quest of the highest truth and remain aloof from the world.

Kishkindha Kand – Doha 15
Ushara barashai trun nahi jāmā | jimi harijan hiyam upaja na kāmā ||
ऊषर् बरषई तृन नहिं जामा । जिमि हरिजन हियँ उपज न कामा ॥
Even though it rains on the barren lands as well, not a blade of grass sprouts on it, just as concupiscence takes no root in the heart of a servant of Sri Hari.

Kishkindha Kand – Doha 16
binu ghana nirmal soha akāsā | harijan iva parihari saba āsā ||
बिनु घन निर्मल सोह अकासा । हरिजन इव परिहरि सब आसा ॥
The cloudless sky is shining as bright as a devotee of Sri Hari, who has abandoned all desires.

Aranya Kand – Doha 45
Shraddhā chhamā mayatri dayā | muditā mama pada priti amāyā ||
श्रद्धा छमा मयत्री दाया । मुदिता मम पद प्रीति अमाया ॥
They are full of piety, forgiving, friendly to all, compassionate, cheerful under all circumstances and sincerely devoted to My feet.

Lanka Kand – Doha 79
bala bibeka dama prahita ghore | chhamā krupā samatā raju jore ||
बल बिबेक दम परहित घोरे । छमा कॄपा समता रजु जोरे ॥
Even so strength, discretion, self-control and benevolence are its four horses, that have been joined to the chariot with the cords of forgiveness, compassion and evenness of mind.

Bal Kand – Doha 86
Rudrahi dekhi madana bhaya mānā | durādharas durgam bhagvānā ||
रुद्रहि देखि मदन भय माना । दुराधरष दुर्गम भगवाना ॥
The God of love was struck with terror at the sight of Bhagavan Rudra(Siva), who is so difficult to conquer and so hard to comprehend.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 157
bipra jevāi dehin dina dānā | siva abhisheka karahin bidhi nānā ||
बिप्र जेवाँइ देहिं दिन दाना । सिव अभिषेक करहिं बिधि नाना ॥
He would perform consecration water over Bhagvan Siva in various ways and invoking the great Lord in his heart.

Uttar Kand – Doha 55
garuda mahāgyāni guna rāsi | hari sevaka ati nikat nivāsi ||
गरुड़ महाग्यानी गुन रासी । हरि सेवक अति निकट निवासी ॥
Garuda, again, is highly enlightened and an embodiment of virtues; moreover, he is a servant of Sri Hari (being his own mount) and lives very close to him.

Uttar Kand – Doha 63
gayau garuda jaham basai bhusundā | mati akuntha hari bhagati akhandā ||
गयऊ गरुड़ जहँ बसई भुसुंडा । मति अकुंठ हरि भगति अखंडा ॥
Garuda went to the abode of Bhusundi of unhampered intellect and possessing uninterrupted devotion to Sri Hari.

Bal Kand – Doha 23
byāpaku eku brahma abināsi | sat chetan dhan ānand rāsi ||
ब्यापकु एकु ब्रह्म अबिनासी । सत चेतन घन आनँद रासी ॥
Brahma is one, all-pervading and imperishable; He is all truth, consciousness and a compact mass of Joy.

Bal Kand – Doha 197
Jo ānand sindhu sukhrāsee | sikar te trailok supāsi ||
जो आनंद सिंधु सुखरासी । सीकर तें त्रैलोक सुपासी ॥
This eldest boy of yours, who is an ocean of felicity and embodiment of joy, a particle of which fills the three worlds with delight.

Uttar Kand – Doha 121
Kavana punya shruti bidit bisālā | kahau kavan adha param karālā ||
कवन पुन्य श्रुति बिदित बिसाला । कहहु कवन अघ परम कराला ॥
Also tell me which is the highest religious merit made known in the vedas and which, again is the most terrible sin.

Uttar Kand – Doha 121
Param dharma shruti bidit ahinsā | par nindā sam agha na garisā ||
परम धर्म श्रुति बिदित अहिंसा । पर निंदा सम अघ न गरीसा ॥
A vow of non-violence is the highest religious merit known to the vedas; and there is no sin as grievous as speaking ill of others.

Aranya Kand – Doha 33
Aavata pantha kabandha nipātā | tehin sab kahi sāp kai bātā ||
आवत पंथ कबंध निपाता । तेहिं सब कही साप कै बाता ॥
The thicket was full of creepers and trees and inhabited by many birds and deer, elephants and lions, Sri Rama overthrew the demon Kabandha even as the latter met him on the way; he told him the whole story about the curse pronounced on him.

Aranya Kand – Doha 34
Tāhi dei gati rām udārā | sabari ken āshram pagu dhārā ||
ताहि देइ गति राम उदारा । सबरी कें आश्रम पगु धारा ॥
Having conferred on him his own (Gandharva) state the beneficent Rama repaired to the hermitage of Sabari.

Bal Kand – Doha 22
Mahābir binavau hanumānā | rām jāsu jasa aap bakhānā ||
महाबिर बिनवऊँ हनुमाना । राम जासु जस आप बखाना ॥
I supplicate Hunuman, the great hero, whose glory has been extolled by Sri Rama himself.

Uttar Kand – Doha 1
Māruta suta main kapi hanumānā | nāmu mora sunu krupānidhānā ||
मारुत सुत मैं कपि हनुमाना । नामु मोर सुनु कॄपानिधाना ॥
Listen, O fountain of mercy; I am the son of the wind-god, a monkey; Hanuman is my name.

Bal Kand – Doha 22
Nām nirupan nām jatan ten | Sou pragatat jimi mol ratan ten ||
नाम निरुपन नाम जतन तें । सोउ प्रगटत जिमि मोल रतन तें ॥
Through the practice of the Name preceded by its true appraisement, however, the same Brahma reveals itself even as the value of a jewel is revealed by its correct knowledge.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 315
Samput bharat saneh ratan ke | ākhar juga janu jiva jatan ke ||
संपुट भरत सनेह रतन के । आखर जुग जनु जीव जतन के ॥
The sandals of the all-merciful lord were like two watchmen entrusted with, the duty of guarding the people’s life or they might be compared to a pair of caskets to enshrine the jewel of Bharata’s love or to the two syllables intended for the practice of the human soul.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 217
Sunu sures raghunāth subhāu | nija aparādh risāhin na kāu ||
Jo aparādhu bhagata kara karai | rām rosh pāvak so jarai ||
सुनु सुरेस रघुनाथ सुभाऊ । निज अपराद रिसाहिं न काऊ ॥
जो अपराधु भगत कर करई । राम रोष पावक सो जरई ॥
Listen, O lord of gods; it is Sri Rama’s nature not to be angry at any offence against himself. But he who sins against his devotees is surely consumed in the fire of his wrath.

Sundar Kand – Doha 28
Harashe saba biloki hanumana | nutana janma kapinha taba jana ||
Mukha prasanna tana teja birana | kinhesi ramachandra kara kaja ||
आगम निगम प्रसिध्द पुराना । सेवाधरमु कठिन जगु जाना ॥
स्वामि धरम स्वारथहि बिरोधु । बैरु अंध प्रेमहि न प्रबोधु ॥
It is fully recognized in the Tantras, Vedas and Puranas, and all the world knows, that the duty of a servant is hard indeed. Duty to a master is incompatible with selfishness. Hatred is blind and love is not discreet.

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 292
āgam nigam prasidhha purānā | sevādharamu kathina jagu jānā ||
swāmi dharam swārthahi birodhu | bairu andha premahi na prabodhu ||
आगम निगम प्रसिध्द पुराना । सेवाधरमु कठिन जगु जाना ॥
स्वामि धरम स्वारथहि बिरोधु । बैरु अंध प्रेमहि न प्रबोधु ॥

Ayodhya Kand – Doha 105
Sangamu sinhāsanu suthi sohā | Chhatru akhayabattu muni manu mohā ||
Chavanra jamun aru gang tarangā | dekhi hohin dukha dārida bhangā ||
संगमु सिंहासनु सुठि सोहा । छत्रु अखयबटु मुनि मनु मोहा ॥
चवँर जमुन अरु गंग तरंगा । देखि होहिं दुख दारिद भंगा ॥
The confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna constitutes his exquisite throne, while the immortal banyan tree (known by the name of Akshayvata) represents his royal umbrella, which captivates the heart even of sages. The waves of the Ganga and Yamuna constitute his chowries, whose very sight destroys sorrow and want.

Bal Kand – Doha 26
Apatu ajāmilu gaju ganikāu | bhae mukut hari nām prabhāu ||
अपतु अजामिलु गजु गनिकाऊ । भए मुकुत हरि नाम प्रभाऊ ॥
The vile Ajamila and even the celebrated elephant and the harlot of the legend were liberated by the power of Sri Hari’s name.

Uttar Kand – Doha 129
Tāhi bhajahi man taji kutilāi | rām bhaje gati kehi nahi pāi ||
तहि भजहि मन तजि कुटिलाई । राम भजें गति केहिं नहिं पाई ॥
Forswearing perversity, my soul adore him whose great vow it is to sanctify the fallen, as is declared by seers and saints, the Vedas and Puranas: who has not secured redemption by worshiping Sri Rama?

Uttar Kand – Chhand 129
Pāi na kehin gati patit pāvan rām bhaji sunu satha manā | Ganikā ajāmil byādh geedh gajādi khala tare ghanā ||
पाई न केहिं गति पतित पावन राम भजि सुनु सठ मना । गनिका अजामिल ब्याध गीध गजादि खल तारे घना ॥
Listen, my stupid soul: who has not been saved by adoring Sri Rama, the purifier of the fallen? The harlot (Pingala), Ajamila, the hunter (Valmiki), the vulture (Jatayu), the elephant and many other wretches have been delivered by him.

Bal Kand – Doha 13
Byās ādi kabi pungav nānā | jinha sādar hari sujasa bakhānā ||
ब्यास आदि कबि पुंगव नाना । जिन्ह सादर हरि सुजस बखाना ॥
Vyasa and various other top-ranking poets, who have reverently recounted the blessed glory of Sri Hari, I bow to the lotus feet of them all; let them fulfil all my desires.

Bal Kand – Doha 18
Jān ādikabi nām pratāpu | bhayau sudhdha kari ulatā jāpu ||
जान आदिकबि नाम प्रतापू । भयऊ सुद्द करि उलटा जापू ॥
The oldest poet (Valmiki) is acquainted with the glory of the Name, inasmuch as he attained to purity by repeating it in the reverse order.

Bal Kand – Doha 30
Budha bishrām sakala jana ranjani | rāmkathā kali kalush bibhanjani ||
बुध बिश्राम सकल जन रंजनि । रामकथा कलि कलुष बिभंजनि ॥
The story of Rama is a solace to the learned and a source of delight to all men and wipes out the impurities of the kali age.

Bal Kand – Doha 110
Tribidha samira susitali chhāyā | Siva bishrām bitap shruti gāyā ||
त्रिबिध समीर सुसीतलि छाया । सिव बिश्राम बिटप श्रुति गाया ॥
Fanned by cool, soft and fragrant breezes, its shade is very refreshing. It is the favourite resort of Siva, extolled by the Vedas.

Bal Kand – Doha 106
Bisvanāth mama nāth purāri | tribhuvan mahimā bidit tumhāri ||
बिस्वनाथ मम नाथ पुरारी । त्रिभुवन महिमा बिदित तुम्हारी ॥
O lord of the universe, O my master, O slayer of the demon Tripura! Your glory is known to all the three spheres.

Bal Kand – Doha 110
Tumha tribhuvan gura beda bakhāna | āna jiva pānvar kā jānā ||
तुम्ह त्रिभुवन गुर बेद बखाना । आन जीव पाँंवर का जाना ॥
You are the preceptor of all the three spheres, so declare the Vedas; what can other poor creatures know?

Sundar Kand – Doha 57
Sandhāneu prabhu bisikh karālā | uthi udadhi ura antar jwālā ||
संधानेउ प्रभु बिसिख कराला । उठी उदधि उर अंतर ज्वाला ॥
When the Lord fitted the terrible arrow to his bow, a blazing fire broke out in the heart of the ocean; the alligators, serpents and fishes felt distressed.

Bal Kand – Doha 235
Debi puji pada kamal tumhāre | Sura nar muni saba hohin sukhāre ||
देबि पुजि पद कमल तुम्हारे । सुर नर मुनि सब होहिं सुखारे ॥
All who adore your lotus feet, O Shining One, attain happiness, be they Gods, men or sages.
