Katha CHOPAIS

This section gives the main Katha Chopai (verse from the Tulsidas Ramayana) for many of the Ram Kathas. We will be adding more to this section.

Kathā jo sakal lok hitkāri | Soi puchhan chaha sailkumāri ||
The daughter of Himalaya sought to elicit from her Lord the story which is profitable to the world.Bal Kand – Doha 111
Puchhehun raghupati kathā prasangā | Sakal lok jag pāvani gangā ||

You have asked me to repeat the history of the Lord of Raghus, which is potent enough to sanctify all the spheres even as the Ganga purifies the whole world.

Namāmishamishān nirvānrupam | vibhun vyāpakam brahma vedaswarupam ||
nijam nirgunam nirvikalpam niriham | chidākāshamākāshavāsam bhajeham ||

I adore you, the guardian of the south-east quarter and Ruler of the whole universe, eternal bliss personified, the omnipresent and all-pervading Brahma manifest in the form of the Vedas. I worship Lord Shiva, shining in his own glory, devoid of material attributes, undifferentiated, desireless, all-pervading consciousness, having nothing to wrap about himself except ether (or enveloping ether itself).

Uttar Kaand – Doha 107Nirākārmonkārmulam turiyam | girā gyān gotitamisham girisham ||
Karālam mahākāl kālam krupālam | gunāgār sansārpāram natoham ||

I bow to the supreme Lord, who is devoid of Form, transcendent and extra-cosmic, beyond speech, understanding and senseperception, terrible yet gracious, the seed of the mystic syllable OM, the Rular of Kailasa, the Devourer even of the great Time-Spirit and the abode of virtues.

Sursari sarsai dinkar kanyā | meklasutā godāvari dhanyā ||
The heavenly river (Ganga), Saraswati, the Sun-born Yamuna, Narmada (the daughter of Mount Mekala), the blessed Godavari and the various other lakes, Seas, streams and rivers, all extolled the Mandakini.Aarnya

Anuj samet gae prabhu tahavān | Godāvari tat āshram jahavān ||
Accompanied by his younger brother, the Lord went back to His hermitage on the bank of Godavari.

Rachi mahes nija mānas rākhā | pāi susamau sivā sana bhāsā ||
Having conceived it, the great Lord Siva treasured it in His mind till. when a favourable opportunity presented itself, he communicated it to his consort, Siva (Parvati).

Rāmkathā munibarj bakhāni | suni mahes param sukhu māni ||
The great sage narrated at length the story of Rama and Lord Mahesa listened to it with extreme delight.

Karunāmay raghunāth gosāi | begi pāiahin pir parāi ||
Lord Sri Rama, who is all compassion, is readily touched by others, pain.

They who inflict pain on others even after attaining the human body have to suffer the terrible pangs of birth and death.

Sab lachchhan sampan kumāri | Hoihi santat piyahi piāri ||
Adorned with all good traits, the girl shall win the unfailing love of her husband.

Jau tapu karai kumāri tumhāri | Bhāviu meti sakahi tripurāri ||
If your daughter practises austerity, the slayer of the demon Tripura, Shiva, can even erase the lines of Fate.

Dev danuja kinnar nara shrenim | Sādar majjahi sakal tribenim ||
Troops of Gods and demons, Kinnaras(demigods) and men, all devoutly bathe in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati.

Sur kinnar nara nāg munisā | jay jay jay kahi dehim asisā ||
Gods, Kinnars, men, Nagas and great sages uttered blessings with shouts of victory.

Pura nara bharat priti mai gāi | mati anurup anup suhāi ||
aba prabhu charit sunahu ati pāvan | karat je bana sura nara muni bhāvan ||
I have portrayed to the best of my ability the incomparable and charming affection (for Sri Rama) of the citizens (of Ayodhya) as well as of Bharata. Now hear of the all- holy exploits of the Lord, the he wrought in the forest to the delight of Gods, men and sages.

Dhanya bharat jay rām gosāi | Kahat dev harshat bariāi ||
“Praised be Bharata and glory to our lord, Sri Rama!” exclaimed the gods with great exultation.

Karunāmaya raghunāth gosāi | Begi pāiahi pir parāi ||
Lord Sri Rama, who is all compassion, is readilly touched by others, pain.

Jagata mātu sarbagya bhavāni | mātu sukhad bolim mrudu bāni ||
The mother of the Universe, the all-knowing Bhavani, then spoke the following words, which brought delight to her mother.

Pārbati bhala avasaru jāni | gai sambhu pahim mātu bhavāni ||
Finding it a good opportunity, Mother Bhavani called on Sambhu.

āge chale bahuri raghurāyā | Rishyamuk parbat niarāyā ||
The Lord of Raghus proceeded still further and approached the Rashyamuk Hill.

Taba nija bhuja bala rājivnaina | kautuk lāgi sang kapi senā ||
Then the lotus-eyed Sri Rama will recover her by strength of his arm taking with him a host of monkeys for mere sport.

Sankara sahaja sarupu samhārā | lāgi samādhi akhand apārā ||
Sankara communed with his own self and passed into an unbroken and indefinitely long Samadhi (trance).

Sambhu sahaj samaratha bhagvānā | ehi bibāham saba bidhi kalyānā ||
Sambhu is all powerful by nature; for He is no other than God himself. Hence matrimony with him will prove auspicious in everyway.

Sukruta punja manjul ali mālā | gyān birāg bichār marālā ||
Aratha dharama kāmādik chāri | kahaba gyān bigyān bichāri ||
The virtuous acts mentioned therein are the charming swarms of bees; the references to spiritual enlightenment, dispassion and reason represent the swan. The four ends of human existence, viz., worldly riches religious merit, enjoyment and liberation, the reasoned exposition of Gyan (knowledge of God in his absolute formless aspect) and Vigyan (Knowledge of qualified Divinity both with and without form), the nine sentiments of poetry.

Mangal bhavan amangal hāri | dravau so dasarath ajir bihāri ||
May that home of bliss and ban of woe take compassion on me – He who sports in the courtyard of King Dasaratha.

Rupa rāsi nrupa ajir bihāri | nāchahi nija pratibimba nihāri ||
Thus frolicking in the courtyard of the royal palace, the All-beautiful danced at the sight of his own shadow.

Rām charan pankaj man jāsu | lubudh madhup iva tajai na pāsu ||
Of Sri Rama’s brothers, I bow, first of all, to the feet of Bharata, whose self-discipline and religious austerity beggar description and whose mind thirsts for the lotus feet of Sri Rama like a bee and never leaves their side.

Jama gana muham masi jaga jamunā si | jivan mukuti hetu janu kāsi ||
Like the sacred river Yamuna in this world it scares away the messengers of Yama (the god of death). It is holy Kasi as it were for the liberation of souls.

Bahuri Ram jankihi dekhai | Jamuna kali mala harani suhai ||
Sri Rama next pointed out to Janaka’s Daughter the beautiful Yamuna, that washes away the impurities of the Kali age.

Nirākārmonkārmulam turiyam | girā gyān gotitamisham girisham ||
Karālam mahākāl kālam krupālam | gunāgār sansārpāram natoham ||
I bow to the supreme Lord, who is devoid of Form, transcendent and extra-cosmic, beyond speech, understanding and senseperception, terrible yet gracious, the seed of the mystic syllable OM, the Rular of Kailasa, the Devourer even of the great Time-Spirit and the abode of virtues.

Tāta rām nahi nara bhupālā | Bhuvaneswar kālahu kara kālā ||
Sri Rama, dear brother, is no mere human king; He is the lord of the universe and the death of death himself.

Byāpaka brahma ajita bhuvneswar | lachiman kahā buja karunākara ||
The All-merciful and invincible Lord of the Universe, the all-pervading supreme Spirit, asked: “Where is Lakshmana?”

Mahābir binavau hanumānā | Rām jāsu jas aap bakhānā ||
I supplicate Hanuman, the great Hero, whose glory has been extolled by Sri Rama Himself.

Mahābir bikram bajarangi | kumati nivār sumati ke sangi ||
You are the great hero, you are endowed with valour, your body is as strong as Indra’s Vajra. You are the destroyer of vile intellect, and you are the companion of one whose intellect is pure.

Sādhu charita subha charita kapāsu | nirasa bisada gunamay fala jāsu ||
Jo sahi dukha parachhidra durāvā | bandniya jehi jaga jasa pāvā ||
The conduct of holy men is noble as the career of the cotton plant, the fruit whereof is tasteless, white and fibrous (even as the doing of saints yeild results which are free from attachment, stainless and full of goodness). Even by suffering hardships (in the form of ginning, spinning and weaving) the cotton covers others’ faults and has thereby earned in the world a renown which is worthy of adoration.

Jay raghubans banaj bana bhānu | gahana danuj kula dahan krusānu ||
Glory to Sri Rama, who delights Raghu’s line even as the sun delights a cluster of lotuses!

Badbhāgi banu avadha abhāgi | jo raghubanstilaka tumha tyāgi ||
How blessed is the forest and how luckless Ayodhya, that will be deserted by you, O crown of Raghu’s line!

Panighat param manohar nānā | tahān na purush karahin asnānā ||
Rājghāt sab bidhi sundar bara | majjhin tahān baran chāriu nara ||

Janam ek dui kahau bakhāni | Sāvdhān sunu sumati bhavāni ||
I will refer to one or two such births at some length; please listen attentively, O wise Bhavani.

Sāvdhān sunu sumukhi sulochani | Bharat kathā bhava bandh bimochani ||
Listen attentively, O fair-faced and bright-eyed lady; the story of Bharata loosens the bounds of worldly existence.

Kari soi rup gayau puni tahavān | ban asoka sitā raha jahavān ||
Assuming the same (minute) form as he had taken before, he repaired to the Ashoka grove where Sita dwelt.

Nāth ek āvā kapi bhāri | tehin asoka bātikā ujāri ||
O lord, a huge monkey has made his appearance and laid waste the Asoka grove.
