ABOUT JANAKPUR DHAM

Janakpur Dham, capital of province no.2, was the capital of King Janak's ancient Mithila Kingdom during Treta Yug/period, nearly 12,000 years ago. The name Janakpur Dham is composed of three words, Janak, Pur, and Dham which stand for father, village, and renowned place respectively. Named after the sage King Janak, Janakpur Dham, however, also encompasses Mithilanchal or the Mithila region. Balmiki's epic Ramayan on Aryan culture and Ramcharitmanas Tulsidas authenticate this.
